England along with Welsh Pitted in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts will face off in an identical group for the World Cup in 2027, promising a highly-anticipated early clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw mirrors their famous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the English team's shock early exit.

Key Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group once again, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, both impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that same group.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and world number one South Africa until the final, assuming the Springboks win their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the groups play out according to the current global standings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from both the English and the Irish until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at launch the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are grouped with Japan, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
