The Video Platform Offers Viewers Control to Limit AI-Generated Videos in Timelines

The platform is rolling out a new feature that permits them to lessen the volume of AI-made media appearing in their feeds. This initiative comes as the company revealed that it now features in excess of 1 thousand million content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

This change is undergoing trials over the coming weeks before a global rollout. This development comes amid a surge in content created by AI, driven by new AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that almost 10% of the quickest rising video streams on a competing service exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this material is deemed low-quality AI content, a phrase for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is often absurd or surreal.

“We know from our community that numerous viewers enjoy content produced via AI tools, including computer-generated images to science explainers, and we aim to offer the community the power to adjust the amount of that, according to their own likes,” commented a company executive.

AI on the Platform

The service disclosed that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its app labeled as artificially created. In total, more than 100 m pieces of content are added to the service daily, making AI content a minor percentage of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Members will be able to decrease or raise the volume of AI-generated videos they view by opening the “manage topic” feature in the application and selecting AI-made media. Other topics that currently be adjusted under the filter cover politics, style, cosmetics, and dance.

Platform Guidelines

Its guidelines oblige users to tag convincing AI-made content, and it bans malicious deepfakes of public figures or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be taken down under its terms of service.

In addition, the app will henceforth add an artificially created tag to content created with its built-in AI features, or flagged by an cross-platform project for spotting artificial media. This measure is aimed to deter users from attempting to bypass the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

The company is furthermore launching a two million dollar awareness program for professionals and groups to develop learning resources about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will benefit charitable organizations specializing in educating computer science.

Content Safety Approach

The platform has supported its content review process, during debate over proposals to lay off hundreds of safety staff in the UK. It is planning to cut a significant number of roles in its trust and safety department in London, with trade unions and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A trust and safety lead explained that staff-based oversight would continue to be important, but AI can safeguard staff by eliminating the most harmful content prior to it gets reviewed by staff. TikTok reported a notable drop in disturbing and violent content handled by human moderators over the previous year due to reliance on its automated systems.

We believe it is crucial to balance humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” she said. “We’ll have staff as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of dangerous material as rapidly, which is where a lot of the machine support is proving valuable process content quickly.”
